Since hitting the 30 year mark at the start of the month, I thought I would share something I shared with a group of youth leaders in recent years when teaching at a training conference. Some of it needs further explaining but some of it is just obvious. I learned these from observation, experience, and the wisdom of others.
- I ought not build a ministry around my personality or charisma!
- I ought not dumb down the gospel to win converts!
- I ought not manipulate students to reach their peers.
- God’s kids come first.
- If I build a ministry on fun and games, I should not expect life change.
- I’m not in the biz of keeping kids off the streets or in the church.
- I cannot out do Hollywood!
- How people start is how they continue!
- The relationships within the group must outlast me.
- Christian students need to learn how to be the church.
- Evangelism follows discipleship.
- The Bible is only as dull as I make it.
- I don’t need to earn the right to be heard!
- I should not create a monster that I cannot tame!
- Big event evangelism gets tiny long term results.
- Scripture should dictate how we do ministry – not teens, parents, or pastors.
- Gospel Ministry…
- “Many use it, few receive it” (CS Lewis’ comment on the Bible)
- Scripture should dictate how we do ministry, not youth culture, sociology, or pragmatism
- Youth not integrated into the life of the church are less likely to do so later.
- We can change the absence of parents discipling their teens by discipling in a way that they can do in their families as adults.
- You are never too old to do youth ministry if you remain young at heart.
- I am too old to wear skinny jeans!
