Five Helpful Articles on a Darker Subject

Depression is not a topic many of us want to think about but it’s a real issue among some of the people we work with. Many of us don’t understand the complexities of this condition that affects so many these days. Here are some excellent resources to learn more.

The Rebelution website of the Harris brothers, ran a great article written by a young person on her experience of depression.  She seeks to help others understand the nature of depression and has a really positive outlook about how it’s helping her spiritual life.  Rather incredibly encouraging! Read it here.

Walt Mueller of CPYU published an info graphic on teen depression that is fascinating and enlightening. I personally take stats on something like this to be somewhat fluid because it’s difficult to get precise percentages of those who struggle with depression.  Yet, the info graphic sheds light on various aspects of the condition.  Walt also recommends a few books to read on the subject so that we can understand it better and help those we serve. Read Walt’s article here.

Steph, while a teenager, attended the youth group I led in England. Years later she married a Swede and moved to Sweden.  She blogs now and wrote a very creative article on recovering from burn out, depression, and PND.  It’s an A-Z that is a fun read and insightful. Read her article here.

The Gospel Coalition a few months ago published a great article by pastor and seminary professor Derek Brown on spiritual depression. His insights are fabulous!  Read that here.

Christianity Today recently published a great article by J.I. Packer. In it, Packer reveals how he learned to live joyfully despite growing up rather cynical. He turns to Ecclesiastes and provides excellent insights into that book.  Read that here.

I had not read these when I preached the most personal sermon I’ve ever had the opportunity to share.  It was on Psalm 13.  That can be found here.
